Does anyone else think that it's complete bullshit that Atlanta has less points than Ottawa or Pittsburgh, but is ahead of them in the standings? I hate that rule about division leaders automatically getting top seeds.
Yeah, kind of wish they'd change that myself.
I mean, you'd expect each of the division leaders to make the playoffs unless one of the divisions ended up being completely pathetic, so it probably wouldn't matter much in terms of just making the playoffs.
But if the season ended today, Atlanta would get home ice advantage and the Pens wouldn't even though the Pens have more points, which is garbage. They should go strictly by points when they're ranking these teams.

It makes sense that the division leaders get home ice advantage. Since teams mostly play interdivisional games, a division leader having a few less points than a lesser ranking team in another division could just mean they are in a more competitive division. Sometimes it will work out that better teams are lower seeds, but there's no perfect system.
I agree with you emdubs. I makes perfect sense to me. Changing that would be extreamly unfair based on the lopsided schedules.

Also, the way the system is now, allows for more heated games within any division, creating the rivalries that we see...Divisional points have a little more weight. The system is solid the way it is, I think.

You guys do make good points about the divisional matchups. I guess it's just sour grapes on my part because it's the Pens who might not get home ice advantage. If the situation were reversed, I'd probably have no problem with it. Heh.
The only time I see this system fail in is the event that a team with more points than a division leader gets knocked out of the playoffs completely.
The playoffs are a battle of the best of the best, not best of the best of a division.

I had a dream last night about how amazing Mark Eaton was for being able to play full time in both the NHL and MLB. This place is taking over my mind or something.
-Tee, Laraque has declared himself 100% but is unsure if he'll be in the lineup due to the fact that Therrien likes to stick w/ what is working. Personally I think Petro has played very well the past 2 games. Isn't it nice to have problems like these for a change!?! Depth is a huge strength of this team.
