For a hockey fan, no time is worse than the present.
But it is a necessary evil.
Our minds have to heal from the tortures of an 82 game season, plus 20 or so playoff games.
All the jobbin, praying, and fighting on messages boards takes it toll.
So what do we do?
Maybe you catch up on the great tv you missed, maybe you hang out with the significant other you ignored.
Maybe you download the soundtrack of "Mama Mia," because it makes you feel free.
Whatever the case, at least we will have something to talk about today and tomorrow.
The NHL schedule is expected to be released today.
UPDATE:
Yea maybe it won't be out today.
Shit
There is no better feeling than looking forward to being suicidal in mid November.
Bring the noise.

We have this strange feeling that Free Candy is going to be the new WWGRD in terms of being everywhere.
Just check out this clip of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Go to the 1:47 mark.
"What are you gonna be forty? Trick or Treating at forty? Can I have free candy? I'm forty years old. I want free candy."
Thanks to [Pam S] for the heads up.
Someone needs to ringtone that.
Also someone at Wingblog was telling us that someone at a pens game had a bag of candy and was walking around throwing it at people.
That is genius.

[Puck Daddy] found a great story from the [Tennessean] about William "Boots" Del Biaggio.
He was going to move the team, and then he accidentally lost his sideburns.
Sideburns in this case mean his real sideburns, and all his cash money.
What a douche.
All this really means to us is that, if there was any doubt, he was going to move the Penguins.
People in Nashville actually cared for ten minutes, than some country music song came on.

Jason Williams had a hell of a day yesterday.
First he signed a 1 year $2.2 million dollar contract. [ TSN ]
Then, according to a google news search, he almost killed Scott Stevens. [ We Are Central PA ]
You've got to serious question the mental health of Williams at this point. Who the hell willingly plays for the Atlanta Thrashers?
Actually neither of those stories are 100% true. TSN is just reporting that some local Canadian TV channel is reporting it. And there is also a slight chance that there are more than one "Jason Williams" in the United States. So who knows.

"Pittsburgh has a great team, great people, great organization. I had to compare the two teams, and there's a little better chance to win the Cup in Detroit. I had a great time with Sid and playing on the power play with Geno [Evgeni Malkin], but the team in Detroit is something special. I know it's a short term, but we never talked about a one-year [deal] with Pittsburgh. We just talked about a long-term deal. I totally believe Detroit has the kind of team that can win it again."

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
That Satan/Hossa ps is hilarious. First?
Dick.
aw eileen, so close
Goodnight again.
ill ringtone the youtube in a few minutes.. yay i LOVE curb your enthuiasm!
I'm early to cblog for the first time since I got back from vacation. . .free time rules.
I love schedules. I compulsively purchase datebooks and the like. I hope the NHL feels the same way.
YAY! About time, now I can finally have a schedule for my life (Well, October to April anyway!)
About "Douche" Del Biaggio, the only thing that gave Preds fans any kind of relief was that he was going to own less than 40% of the team. He came in when Balsillie was still trying to buy the team, and basically said that if Balsillie's deal fell through, he would buy the team. Those who were paying attention to the Pens situation had a REALLY sick feeling in our stomachs when he said that. We knew about KC, and DB's wanting to move the Pens there.
All of DB's crap reminds me of the fall of Bruce McNall in LA about 10 years ago.
HOPEFULLY the schedule masters will have the Preds playing in Pittsburgh, and I can get a few friends up there. Tough call on the jersey though.
i cant wait for the schedule to come out because it will give us something to talk about other than name pronunciations.
@ eileen: we should start to talk about kennywood over the next few days.
i think eileen went to bed
so i made the ringtones, now i just have to figure out how to get them online..
Awesome, get to figure out the other 9 games I want to go to in Washington this season today.
They'll also be setting the prices on the partial season packages after today too.
Definitely looking forward to both of the Pens games coming up. Here's to owning the phone booth yet again in 2008-09.
And finally, insomnia blows, especially when you can't cash in on the first comment race.
MORE Free Candy Ringtones!>
So this is my first crack at the ringtones thing.. Let me know if they are alright, I can fix them if they're not..
so pumped for the schedule.
and I wish my phone wasn't a piece of shit so I could get a ringtone..although I can't get myxertones or anything like to work with my phone
The NHL schedule is expected to be released today.
link? :p
sweet deal if it comes out earlier than i expected.
@penstone -i wanted to make those ringtones. now i have nothing to do for the next 8 minutes. oh well, good day to you!
@jefe
im sorry! i was just really bored..
this is the only thing i can find on it.
"The NHL schedule is generally released the day after the MLB All-Star Game." (wednesday)
which apparently is the only day of the year where none of the four major sports are being played. or some shit like that.
i just want to be sure.
@penstone -haha its cool. nice work!
i just finished watching The Mist. and i really enjoy endings like this movie had.
now im stuck on curb your enthusiasm clips. douche-borg.
hopefully I can make both boston games.
@jefe
HAHA awesome clip! i need to do that sometime.. i hate those earthings!
Good morning Cblog.
Schedule today??? Excellent!
@Predsboy18 - I'm hoping for the Pens to play in Nashville this year...haha. Opposite of you. :)
Ah, this weekend ruined meeeeeee.
I don't wanna go to work.
Ballsack.
If the schedule comes out, I'll have something to look forward to today, at least.
Have a good Monday, everyone.
PS. FREECANDYYYYYYYY.
FREEEEEEE CAAAAAAAAAAAANDY!
I really hope the Pens play at home on Halloween so we can watch Free Candy give out Free Candy. What a treat that would be.
According to the Miami Herald, the schedule will be out Wednesday
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/flapanthers/2008/07/schedule-stuff.html
why am i still awake.
yeah a few msg boards i found too tend to agree its a july 16th release for the new schedule.
Yeah, I've heard it's on Wednesday too...
if tony little himself says its on wednesday, it must be true.
jarrrrrrkoooooooo!!
I'd never steer you wrong Jefe...
RUUUUUUUUUUTUUUUUUU!
jefe
i cant believe you are still awake..
i cant believe i am too..
guess we'll have to wait til wednesday.. ughhh
yeah i really should not get used to staying up this late on what could potentially be worknights.
but apathy has rained on me. now im feelin like a soggy dream. so close to drowning, but i dont mind.
ah nice, a little green day to add to the morning
happy meatloaf monday!
@Ali The only reason I'm hoping the Preds play up in Pittsburgh is so that I can make another trip up there! NEED ME A PRIMANTI'S SANDWICH!!! We have a place down here like it, but it's better in da Burgh!
ah i had primantis for dinner last night--YUM! they had sports fan bloopers on too which was funny when hearing the whole restaurant go "OOH" and "AHH" after each one
Wow... I feel honored that my Curb Your Enthusiam "Free Candy" link was used by the staff! Woooooooooooooooo!!!! This must be my lucky week. Not only is my name on the page, I'm getting married this weekend. Life is good.
Is it sad that I go to Primantis and get their Greek Salad? It's sooo goooood.
@Wingblog folks > Am I just totally unobservant (cause I am) or did the troll come after we left? Damn I miss all the fun. At least I got to leave Exile Island.
Oooo Kennywoodblog. ARG, you guys are going to make me go broke. :)
what an honor to have my jobber truck picture make it to the big show, that's going on the resume
@mizzpenz
Congrats on the shoutout and getting married!!
@lady jaye
its not sad, i get the buffalo chicken sandwich.. its just a regular normal so non-traditional primantis, but DAMN its good!
@penstone > It's good to know I'm not a blasphemer ;) Although I don't get coleslaw on my sandwich when I do get one. haha.
There is no better feeling than looking forward to being suicidal in mid November.
Shakespeare couldn't have put that better.
Maybe this was mentioned already, but for those (like me) who didn't know...Vinny LeCav's deal just got even more hilarious. Not only will be an 8 million dollar cap hit at age 39, but he can never, ever leave.
Most striking, Lawton said, is Lecavalier's "no-move" clause, which gives the All-Star center power to veto any transaction, even being put on waivers.
"Striking" is certainly an interesting word to use.
StupidNHL'08blog:
Finally had got it for my birthday and last night completed the playoffs. (Pens sweep the Flames to take the Cup!)
Went to the off-season, did some wheeling and dealing and ended up with these lines. Had to compensate for the fact that there's no Pesonen or Kennedy or Letang:
Martin Erat - Crosby - Satan
Fedotenko - Malkin - Sykora
Darcy Tucker - Staal - Cooke
Dupuis - Talbot - Godard
Whitney - Gonchar
Orpik - Eaton
Gill - Scuderi
Fleury
Chris Mason
I suspect I'm probably overpaying for Mason so I may deal him for a cheaper backup.
I have no idea why I take such delight in this, but I do.
Good news...
...Free Candy.
Primanti'sblog...
Roast Beef... Do it!
no cole slaw?! now thats blasphemous! but hey, at least you like primantis so i'll take it, its okay!
mmmm roast beef! now i want primantis for lunch today.. darn monroeville for putting one so close to my house!
Wow, even I have cole slaw on it, that's what makes it what it is!
The restaurant I'm talking about is all the way downtown (I'm in the burbs of Nashville). Almost worth the $10 parking for one of em.
raybin - what system? kennedy and letang can be called up from the minors as well.
I'm probably going against most Pittsburghers in saying this but:
Peppi's > Primanti's.
Try it before you judge!
@dan
Playstation 2.
The minor league management, so far as I can tell, sucks ass. What am I missing to call up LeGame and Kennedy?
fatty
peppi's is a hidden treasure tucked away in obscurity of the north side... used to go there before pirates games in the early to mid 90s when we had a ticket package... great stuff there!
Penstone:
Yeah, I go through spells where my friends and I will go 3-4 days in a row. It's probably the best thing I've ever had in my mouth... and that's saying something...lol.
I don't eat coleslaw so I can't even do it. I feel so bad every time I say hold the mayo and coleslaw. Lady Jaye = fail. :) But at least I know this.
Okay I suppose I need to WOOOORK. Bla
p.o.
Yeah, it's a weekly or so ritual for my friends and I to go destroy our hang-overs on Saturdays. There are 3 in the city but nobody seems to know about it.
fatty - ate there, and no
raybin - kennedy u aren't missing anything, letang is a hitter believe it or not. gill is an aircraft carrier in that game.
Gill is an aircraft carrier in real life!
fatty
where are the others? i only have been to the one on the northside
as far as comparing it to primanti's i dont think you can because peppi's is more hoagies where as primantis is more sandwiches with the french-fry/coleslaw niche going on (and to not like primanti's is not blasphamy; i have never had anything other than a city of pittsburgh address my entire life and i tell people all the time how overrated primanti's is... good? yes.. but still very overrated)
peppi's i thought was overrated. if you would've told me the night i was drunk and ate 3 primanti's sandwiches i may have stabbed you. greatest. night. ever.
p.o.
There is one downtown, maybe Grant St. but I'm not positive, and there's one in the Strip District too. I'd have to agree with you, because they are different.
@mizzpenz - good luck with your wedding this weekend!
What's Primanti's? Is it just a sandwich shop? What makes it so special? Is it a Pittsburgh thing or is it everywhere in the US? *please don't yell at me because I've never been there before, we don't have them here in Canada.
primanti's >>> peppi's
@dan
You've gotta try it again.
New Blazin' Saddle = life changing.
carson st. deli>>>>>>any other sandwich shop
fatty - what is it? sounds spicy, and that's not good. me and spicy food don't get along.
interesting to see fatheads not mentioned too. i've only eaten there once. it was good, but my burger was overcooked.
Predsboy18 I know your talking about Pirahna's We stop there verytime we are in town. The bread is off a bit other than that he makes a pretty mean sammich
p.o.
That used to be true about Carson St. Deli. That was before those goddamn hippies bought it. Its gone down hill faster than Christopher Reeves in a busted wheelchair.
@ carrol
Primanti's is a legendary sandwich shop in Pittsburgh. Their claim to fame is that they put fries and cole slaw on all their sandwiches
It is a bit spicy. Steak and I believe sausage with some green and red sweet peppers and crushed red pepper, lettuce and ranch.
The Roethlisburger is pretty damn good too and it got them in Trivial Pursuit! Damn, I'm getting hungry now...
@p.o.
Never been. Where abouts is it on Carson?
fatheads and primantis are niche "pittsburgh things" for people to do when they come in from out of town... anytime i talk to someone who is not from pittsburgh about their trip here they always tell me how they had primantis or went to fatheads and got a tshirt.... the best thing at fatheads isnt the sandwiches however, its the grilled wings, theyre something special... talking about them makes me think about running lunchblog down there today
Wowwwwww, man.
Laughed out loud reading what I wrote back in November after that NJ game. Talk about two weeks from hell...and that was before Buddy landed back at the vets for three more days.
But then I thought of this...
That happened the day before Thanksgiving. The next night, the Pens beat Ottawa in the now-infamous comeback game that in hindsight, many pointed to as the turning point of the season for the Pens.
Just sayin'.
max
have you tried it lately since it moved? i was there a few weeks ago and it was awesome
fatty
they used to be on the corner right across from nakama but they have moved down the street a little bit, basically across the street from mario's i believe (a block away from diesel)
Po...
The Carson st. deli is very very good... but still no Primanti's.
Regarding the schedule, there isn't going to be much change outside of a few games it'll be almost a mirror image of last year. At least that's how it works with certain series. I'm willing to wager that the Pens will play the Bruins on Thursday in December & February & maybe if we're lucky the 3rd game will be on Sunday instead of Wednesday....
Primanti's sandwiches > Canada... just joking... but seriously.
@ p.o.
They didn't move. They're still in the same building they've always been. Their capicola is greasier than my italian uncle. They used to be the bomb then someone bought it out and started using products of lesser quality.
@ Carroll -
What's Primanti's? Is it just a sandwich shop? What makes it so special? Is it a Pittsburgh thing or is it everywhere in the US? *please don't yell at me because I've never been there before, we don't have them here in Canada.
Primanti Bros.
It's a Pittsburgh-based restaurant chain famous for their sandwiches. They load up each sandwich with about a pound of deli meat (or eggs, sausage, kielbasa, whatever), coleslaw, tomato slices and french fries and put it all between two slices of Italian bread.
At the end, you have something that looks like the sandwich you see in the left-hand corner of the Primanti's home page.
There isn't a good or bad time to have one of their sandwiches, but I will say they are especially good at about 2:00 in the morning after hanging out with friends and maybe having a wobbly pop or two.
@Stoosh
Haha, wobbly pop. Don't forget the sarsparilla and oat sodas!
max
i dont know if you are talking about a different carson st deli, but the one im talking about is on the south side of pittsburgh, it used to be across the street from nakama, at 1612 E Carson St.(now it appears a pizza place will be opening soon in that space) and a few months ago it moved about a block and a half down and across the street to its new location at 1507 E Carson St
The lovely people over at The Sidney Crosby Show mentioned that it's probably the 16th when the schedules come out but keep your heads up anyways ...
@Dr. Turk: About Toews: They haven't named Toews captain yet ... I jumped the gun there ... they say he's a leading candidate for the position ... if I only could find that article again ... I should have saved it, but alas I'm an idiot ...
Check #1 on the Blackhawks news thing ... This is a bad photoshop or his neck is really pale ...
@Stoosh: They use Mancini's bread for the sandwich, don't they? Mancini's Bread is like God baked it and sent it down to an Italian family to spread the deliciousness ... yum!
@ ihk - not sure about mancini's but i know it's right down the street from my grandma's and it kicks ass
IHK...
That's his pink collar I think...
@ I Have Kasparaitis
wow, that is definitely a white neck.
That's funny.
Ok, all of this talk about Primanti's is making me homesick and hungry.
It is Mancini's Bread that is used for the sandwiches. I miss Primanti's. The best was hitting Metro-hell/Metropol (we hated the place, but it really was one of the few places to go to in the late 80's) until it closed, going to Primanti's and then finally coming out of the place at 3:30 a.m. (usually how long it took to order, eat and get out of there at the end of the night(). It was a double bonus if, when you left, the doughnut guy was there (he was an old man who showed up in a white van -- free candy maybe? -- and who sold piping hot, freshly made glazed doughnuts).
As for the schedule, I'm guessing since the Pens did a west coast run last season, they won't be back this season, correct? I've vowed to do an away trip this year because getting family members to give up their tickets to let me catch a game when I come back to Pittsburgh is impossible.
Also, Happy Bastille Day.
Katie: I'm not sure if the pens will be back. They are playing every team this year... I'm pretty sure. I'm not sure if they will be out there or those teams will be coming this way...
Primanti's <3
IHK
you are about my younger sister's age and tomorrow is her birthday (she is turning 18)... any suggestions what to get a teenage girl for her birthday?
Ps...
Bastille Day = Great song...
@thefandangler: Yeah ... I wasn't sure but the way his head turned and the way it looks, I just wanted to say that *smile*
@Dan: The original one is in McKees Rocks ... does she live there?
@P.O.: It's all about her interests ... with clothes, you gotta take her shopping, so you probably don't want to do that *laughs* What does she like so I can aid you further?
LadyJaye, I order my Primanti's without slaw also. I've never liked the stuff, mayonnaise and shredded cabbage just sound like a concoction used to elicit government secrets from spies. Brett Favre. And who remembers the KCF Shredders commercial parody from SNL? Iceberg lettuce and tangy mayonnaise served in a bag. It'll rock your world!
Yessir, meat and fries is good enough for me. In fact, for as long as I can remember I've thrown curly fries on Arby's beef n' cheddars. Brett Favre.
With all of the problems going on in this country, it is very comforting to see that some Wisconsinites have their priorities in order, assembling themselves and chanting for what is most important to them. Brett Favre.
IHK
what does every teenage girl like? boys? music? hanging out with their friends? i already bought her an ipod and the speaker thing to dock it on.. the clothes stuff i give my girlfriend my credit card and tell her to pick my sister out something nice so i dont have to sit in express with "that look" on my face for an hour
ihk - about 8 houses up from it. i like to wear kevlar when i go there.
I think i've been watching too much ESPN. Off to work I go...
Okay, not sure if this was mentioned before, but my buddies and I looked up Pesonen on NHL for Xbox 360 and he is rated an 82.
Since EA Sports and Xbox are never wrong, we should be good to go for next year.
primanti's slaw is actually vinegar based, not mayonnaise.
dan
just steer clear of paul spadafora and you wont need that kevlar in the rocks
p.o. - i wish that was the truth. we have been, um, urging my grandma to move. my mom grew up there. it's changed, a lot. my dentist is there and everything, but it's a bad place, a very very bad place. i saw a dude get in an argument with someone there when i was little, and the car then proceeded to hit him. it's just gotten worse.
@P.O.: Pretty much ... I'm a tom-boy so my interests are practically the same with some additions ...
That sounds okay ... since you already bought her an ipod with accesories ... maybe buy her a bunch of songs that she likes ... you gotta know what she likes in that dept ...
I'll take to yinz soon, I'll be back ... I have to sell business ads again ...
@ raybin: Kennedey and LeGame are on the minors team. All you have to do is call them up and dress them.
Pesonen is in the game, too. There should be a way to get him.
Oops. Dan said that. Uhm, to call them up you have to go to Minor League Management. It somewhere in the roster stuff. Then you just change their status. It's a real pain in the ass. Then you gotta go back to your Edit Lines page and dress them.
dan
i know all about the rocks.... i basically grew up in the boys and girls club down there and am from right down the road in sheraden... as with anywhere else with the same economic make-up and diverse mix of individuals (read: anywhere else that has very poor areas mixed in with middle class areas) there are nice parts and seedy parts, you will typically be ok in the seedy parts unless you provoke someone or you walk around at 3am for no reason, which shouldnt be done anywhere for that matter
@ colin: On the PC version he is a 75.
Also, good morning. After I said I thought I was gonna go to bed, I passed out. Didn't take off my glasses, turn down the TV, etc. Just passed out. And I just woke up. Ha ha.
@sh0ez
Thanks for the info! I must be an epic failure because I can't seem to find the AHL roster. I go to "minor league management", but all I see there rookies and people I've sent down to make roster room. Probably just haven't played around enough.
So Peso's probably been signed by someone else? Cool. Easy enough to make a trade. They should probably take Erat or Tucker even up for him.
@sh0ez again
Sick anticipation my friend! Thanks again!
Annnnnnd, I hate slaw, too.
Speaking of foodblog, Olive Garden's new special is out. Me and Michelle are due for a date . . .
On my last trip to the 'burgh many years past, my bro made sure to bring me to Primanti's which I enjoyed a great deal, and he also brought me to someplace he called "The Dirty O", but after a few ICs that night I don't have much recollection of that place.
confessionblog(?, still learning the lingo): I keep looking at the woman next to the photographer. Just saying.
My basement was flooded with a sewer backup. Stepping in other people's poop was... unpleasant.
@ raybin: Pesonen is on his Finnish team. Oddly enough, that league made it in the game. Yeah, that and the Swedish league are on all versions. The DEL and Extraliga league are only on PS2/PC versions.
I really hope that nfor NHL 09, EA doesn't give the PC/PS2 version to some shiity sub-company to be made.
the dirty o - speaking of places you don't wanna be near at 3 am. yet all the times i was drunk and wondering around at 3 am in oakland, ah memories.........
p.o. - the problem is it's all seedy anymore
PC gamers expect nothing less than to get jobbed by EA.
I seem to remember a drawing that was done after the Pens first cup win that showed a Penguins player (I'd assume it was old #66) being hoisted on the shoulders of a Steelers player on one shoulder and a Pirates player on the other. Anybody remember this? Is there a copy available somewhere? I'd like it for my avatar image.
Heh, seeing "Jumbo", "Kolbassi", and "Pop" on the downtown menu... Feels like home.
And I have not for one day of my life been a legal resident of Pennsylvania. When everyone else I knew rooted for the Orioles and Redskins and didn't know what hockey was, I was a Bucs and Steelers fan, and would've followed hockey religiously if my parents had cable in the house, but I still would've missed out on the Pens' Cups, unless we'd had a satellite dish with access to the CBC.
Alls I have to say is thank Jebus for the Internet and Center Ice. And I work with a surprising number of Pittsburgh transplants, so I'm not as alone in my fandom.
But they still call it "soda" or "Coke" (for everything. Even Pepsi.) here. And my wife makes fun of me when I call it "pop."
@kaspar: that is Aliu's pink shirt, not his neck. He's half black and that color all over.
Akim Aliu
My family is from the rocks and I know it well. I has gone to hell. I go to mancini's once a week to buy bread. Getting it at Giant Eagle just isn't the same. I must say that now days after you buy some bread you can go to the end of the block and purchase a stamp bag or some crack. Talk about convenience!
Does anyone else wonder if all the people in Esplen are paint sniffers?
Ha ha ha. Grant Fuhr and Kordell Stewart on Pros Vs. Joes.
Ha ha. "As long as it's the pass game, we can take Kordell."
Hearing talk of Mancini's reminds me of Pacifico's bakery in Altoona. I have yet to find better Italian bread.
I should've tried to get into Pitt for library school. Me=fail.
Although I do have my MLS from a perfectly credible institution, and I got to spend a couple summers in Washington, DC, as part of the deal. Which wasn't that bad aside from the godawful humidity. That's what happens when you pave over a fucking swamp.
Ha ha. He just owned some trash dude. Dude = stunned that Kordell Stewart knocked him over.
Hat trick over 15 minutes = Cblog is dead.
I always thought "Pros vs. Joes" would be funnier if they found subtle ways to insult some of the Pros that they brought on there.
For instance, in tonight's episode we could see...
1. if an Average Joe could last longer during the Steelers training camp "run test" than Jamain Stephens.
2. if an Average Joe can stop more slapshots from the blueline than Tom Barrasso.
3. if an Average Joe could neutralize more odd-man-rushes than Hans Jonsson.
4. who could hit more wide-open nets - Average Joe or Konstantin Koltsov?
5. if an Average Joe can steal second base on Jason Kendall.
6. if an Average Joe can execute one page from the Penn State playbook with more efficiency than Anthony Morelli after having just 15 minutes to study the plays (we had this greenlighted until Morelli's dad complained to producers that there wouldn't be anyone on hand to draw the plays in the dirt for Anthony before he took the snap).
Dear NCAA Football and gaming fans,
Tomorrow is Christmas.
NCAA Football '09 comes out Tuesday for the PS3, XBox 360, PS2, etc.
I probably won't be able to pick it up until next week, but since I'm still using the PS2, it remains to be seen if this will be the third year in a row that I'm basically paying for a roster update.
Nevertheless, I'll still more than likely get it. Me = sucker
I'll be interested to see how good Lesean McCoy is for Pitt.
@ stoosh: Number 6 is hilarious.
They're having Fuhr shooting pucks at them in goal right now. It's not from the blueline, though.
The black dude won it! Hah. They all have one win, so they are taking shots from one goal and trying to make a goal at the opposite end. And now the black guy lost. Ha ha.

Also someone at Wingblog was telling us that someone at a pens game had a bag of candy and was walking around throwing it at people.
That was Stokes + bud throwing it around at tailgateblog Game 4.6 v. DET...as soon as we heard it, we knew it was a fellow cblogger! A funny part too, is that these two kids came up to our group that had assembled and asked if we wanted to buy some candy. Someone replied, 'Naaaah....we have FREE CANDY!!!!!'
[shamWow!]
Next season, when Orpik takes someone out, I want to hear that clip over the mellon speakers "I want Free Candy" - DO IT!
BTW...the Jason Williams signing is official...
He officially plays in the NHL wasteland known as the Atlanta Thrashers and we'll probably never here from him again.
A-T-L = shamJokes.
here = hear.
me = shamFail.
Alright I'm back ...
@P.O.: Did you need any more advice ... I can now give 100% of my attention to c-blog ...
The thing about the Thrashers is that they're getting close to respectability. They'd probably be there already if they had anyone other than Don Waddell as GM.
Zach Bogosian will be a monster in this league, mark my words. They've got Exelby and Hainsey and Enstrom on the blue line too.
They've got no goaltending and no scoring, though. Kovalchuk's ability to score like he does is more a testament to his ungodly talent than anything else. If he had an ass-kicking, name-taking center to set up him up, he'd set the world on fire.
Jason Williams will help. If they could get Christensen and Armstrong to consistently play up their potential, they'd have some solid players on their second/third lines.
Their problem seems to be they can't get anyone to "buy in" to what they're trying to do. Brian Campbell is a good example. They almost landed him, but he went with the more promising team.
I can't blame him....it's such an awful atmosphere down there.
It's a shame, really...they're willing to spend money, but no one wants to go there. They NEED to convince a bigtime center (and not one past his prime) to be the face of the team with Kovalchuk.
They ain't going anywhere though with Kari Lehtonen in goal. And Moose isn't the answer either.
The best thing that could happen to them is to self-destruct this year and win the Tavares Derby. Maybe they could create some fan buzz with him ala Stamkos in Tampa. Maybe having a potential young superstar like him could convince some playmakers to sign up.
Geez, are the Thrashers really worth this many words? Probably not.
4 more days (including today) til the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight.
woo. i wish i was going.
Who knew there were Jobbers in Minot, North Dakota?
Who knew that NHL players spend the off season in Altoona getting themselves into knife fights?
YOU knew, if you read today's Pensblog...
I can't wait for TDKblog.
Ted Nolan was fired today per ESPN.
@ Raybin -
Maybe it was another Waddell blunder, but they HAD a big-time playmaking center in Mark Savard and let him get away.
Don Waddell > Dave Littlefield, but not by much.
Word cblog
Did anyone see today that Kris Beech was re-signed to a two way deal. Might as well piss on a pile of 100 dollar bills.
Fuck me that was like the 11th.
Fail.
Kris Beech was resigned for $112.09, a 1 year PAT transit pass, 3 fried jumbo sandwiches and a red bull.
Jason Krog signed by the Canucks...what is it with Ducks and Nucks changing back and forth? lol Not that I mind...he was good when he was a Duck and I was sad when he got traded away.
@stoosh
Maybe it was another Waddell blunder, but they HAD a big-time playmaking center in Mark Savard and let him get away.
Exactly why the guy should tarred, feathered, and out of town on a rail.
See also: Coburn, Braydon.
They could be well on their way to respectability if not contention, but he takes them two steps back for everyone one forward.
I can't imagine many people will buy-in until he's sent packing.
@colin
I figured the DevilTank defection to the Pens was the final nail in his coffin.
@stilly
Eh. Beech is pretty much mud, but I suppose he's servicable enough to call up as a stopgap for a game or two now and again. I have no doubt he came on the cheap, which was what they needed at this point.
Noooooo!!! I was so looking forward to loserishly entering the entire Sabres schedule into iCal while I waited around in the airport today.
He officially plays in the NHL wasteland known as the Atlanta Thrashers and we'll probably never here from him again.
Very true. Went to a Rangers game there YEARS ago with my aunt (who lived there at the time) and she told me that the crowd that was there was a strange thing to see.
Also, if you ever make your way to ATL, it's the strangest things you'll ever see. Suites on one entire side of the building. I sat on that side, and it was strange to look up and see that!
@anne: BabyJarome! N'awwww! Now I want to go find my picture of babyBing and put that up.
Yeah, I saw about Beech a few days ago. Meh.
Any one surprised that Forsberg's still hurt? Me neither ...
Is anyone going to want to sign him? I mean, he's hurt all the time, and he's old ... maybe it's time for you to see to the exit, Forsberg ...
Thrashersblog...
They also need to convince Kovalchuk to stick around. I believe he's an unrestricted free agent after the 2009-10 season, and I'd love to see what would happen if he's forced to decide between making $9M per year in a stagnant hockey market like Atlanta or making $10M a year back home in Russia.
See also: Coburn, Braydon.
Coburn was dying in ATL. They seemed to be all about Kovalchuk (aka Kurvachuk) and scoring goals, and Coburn was never going to fit their "system." It's for the best that he got the hell out of there, too bad it was the Flyers thoguh.
From what I remember, Savard wasn't going to resign anyway, but Waddell refused to give up or trade him. Their loss.
@stoosh
Re-signing Kovalchuk is critical. It's why they better get off their dead asses and start to make people believers soon.
If he leaves, they might as well fold up stakes and start over in Kansas City because you won't ever be able to make the city of Atlanta care again.
Heh. I don't even really give a damn about the Thrashers, but re-reading what I've written it sounds like I'm their wrought up #1 fan.
predsboy...
I actually got to see Kaspar's last game [he was either traded that night after the game or the next day, I can't immediately recall] @ the Philips in 2002. The wife-to-be at the time and I [thanks to our Free Travel Pass as US Airways employees] went down to the A-T-L for a few days to catch the game.
Those suites on one side are FREAKY...plus, I've never been in an arena as cold as that one was...[probably the stifling temps and 187% humidity...in MARCH...might have had something to do with it]
but, the building did heat up for a second or two when the flames shot out of the Thrashers above the scoreboard.
@raybin: It would be very sad if the Thrash do leave since that would be the second one they lost.
Here's an article on Nolan's firing
Looks like the Islanders wanted to jump back into that contest to challenge the Lightning and the Thrashers for the worst-run franchise in the NHL. Ted Nolan pushed the Isles to do better than they had any right to do in both of his seasons as coach. I hope he gets a chance to coach a team with competent ownership and management.
For the record, the Connecticut Post is based out of Bridgeport.
Maybe Al Arbour is coming out of retirement!
Chocolate covered hot peppers = crazy delicious!
staff-
that was me who mentioned "someone" was wandering around the mellon arena lot throwing free candy at people. and that "someone" ended up being Stokes and his brother.
so the Islanders are no longer willing to commit to the Indian? Disappointing.
He turns the Isles around (a 14 pt swing), and has a down year in 2008? IIRC, they weren't that far under .500. Garth better have a hell of a backup plan for ditching Nolan.
Surprisingly, or maybe not suprisingly, not a word of Nolan's firing was mentioned up here. I'll post the NYI promo stuff I picked up near the Ruby Tuesdays that I visited for lunch.
The schedule will be released Wednesday according to On Frozen Pond (THANKS to Going Five Hole for the "heads up" -- thought I'd pass it on to you boys)!!

Maybe Forsberg can retire and drag Brett Favre's indecisive ass to the old folks' home with him. Seeing as how ESPN has turned into the Brett Favre Network the last 48 hours, I'm surprised they haven't dispatched Sal Paolantonio to investigate this angle.
remember when brett favre was in there's something about mary?
i'm here to play the dolphins, dumbass
beech? jesus. i heard we resigned rico fata as well.
randomquestionblog:
anyone in here currently commute to duquesne?
The Isles were 35-38-9 last season. Not bad for a team where Mike Comrie and Bill Guerin were your top two scorers, and neither of them hit 50 points. Add to that, Trent Hunter and Richard Park were the only two players to play in all 82 games.
So you tell me how the Isles picked up 79 points last season with all that against them.
Just to repeat, Mike Comrie led the team in scoring with 49 points.
Bill Guerin: voted most overrated shit smuggling hockey player...
Oh no, Jason Williams is getting all homicidal in my hometown. The report got it wrong, though. He didn't threaten Scott Stevens with a knife, he held his skate to his throat.
I heard the schedule is coming out July 16. I'm giddy with excitement.
Here it is (Favre)
I forgot how stiff he was in that movie.
Bill Guerin: voted most overrated shit smuggling hockey player...
I swear to Gary that if we re-signed Rico Fata, it better be to pass out Ice Times at Gate One.
j.s.
No worries on Fata. He'd get gunned down...
...and Chris Elliot might be the best part of there's something aboot mary.
maria,
I wondered if it could possibly be a case of mistaken identity myself out there in Tuna Town. I mean, Jason Williams that basketball player went after someone with a shotgun, didn't he?
It wasn't him was it?
...give the nhl a bad name...
sabrejets,
It was probably NHL Jason Williams. He probably snapped after being signed to Atlanta. I know I would.

Here's one from my archives that can be used for the 08-09 season!
One of the CBJ Blogs came across the unofficial home schedule that was sent to season ticket holders, here's a link:
http://lightthelamp.blogspot.com/2008/07/thursday-round-up.html
Reason I mention is because the Jackets look to have a home date with the Pens in March
...oh wait I got confused. It wasn't "Jason Williams" aka "White Chocolate" guard for the Miami Heat,
It was JAYSON Williams of the
76ers and it happened after he left a charity event in Bethlehem PA and not Altoona.
Well, excuuuuuuuse me.
I think you're right about the Thrashers though. Who wants to wear a shirt with a bird swirling a glass of Tang on it?
Who doesn't like tang? Does anyone know where I can score a pet monkey? The places online aren't that good. They expect you to be a certified handler. That and I think its wrong to mail a monkey. Depends on the situation though.
@ J.S. -
Garth Snow's replacement plan for Ted Nolan?
This whole thing is just screaming "Roger Dorn in Major League II. If the NHL is ever going to have its "As of 11:15 this morning....I activated myself!" moment, it's sitting right there in Long Island.
(And no, Lemieux coming back doesn't count. If God was playing right wing and wanted a center, he'd choose Lemieux. Roger Dorn was a legend only within the confines of his own mind.)
when max said he was showing up to wingblog with a sleeve-less Mr. Robert's Neighborhood tee...I thought he was joking.
when looking at the pics:
max powers = no joke.
I just found a video called MVP (Most Valuable Primate) in the discount bin at my local Big Lots. Anything that celebrates the concept of Chimps and Hockey can't be all bad...
ESPN's bottom line reports Nolan's dismissal was "mutual between Nolan and Snow, based on philosophical differences about the team's direction."
Translation: You're running this team into the ground.
@J.S.
I love the smug expression on your avatar, just sayin'...
@Stoosh: Yeah , here's hoping ... I like Favre, but come on, choose! Forsberg should definitely be in a retirement home ...
Rico Fata should be paired up with Meloche handing out Ice Times ... where did Eric go anyways? Maybe we should just stick with keeping his Dad here ... *smiles*
stoosh...
maybe Neil Smith will get an interview for the coaching position?
wait.
maybe not.
kaspar;
don't invoke him, and no matter who he tries to provoke, please don't answer, just stonewall 'im...
@sabrejets - I've seen that movie...there's an entire series of them...you know chimps playing baseball, basketball...etc. I think it kind of comes after the ones about the dog playing all the sports...what was his name??? Anyway, I haven't seen that movie in forever...I think I'll have to dig it up again...
wow, i was gonna make a fata joke but no need to now
ali, it was Air Bud. I loved that golden retriever and his amazing athletic abilities. They made like 10 movies too, but no Air Bud hockey movie. Lame.
sabrejets, that's from the Godard video. Staff said we should sign that fan to the 4th line.
Since the Pens were close to the cap, I did the next best thing and signed him to a 1 yr two way deal to be my avatar. If he doesn't perform, he's gone.
Do you think Garth Snow, Mike Milbury, Don Waddell and Kevin Lowe get together a few time a season to have cocktails and argue over who sucks worse?
@maria - ahhh!! Air Bud...I don't know why I couldn't think of it, but I knew someone here would...anyway, yeah what's with no Air Bud hockey movie...they had pretty much everything else...actually, I think my brother has this movie...
Who do you think would win in an indian knife fight: Beech of Fata?
dan...
if your looking for someone to job:
there's always this guy.
[dude]
@ ali
I looked it up on Wikipedia. They have an Air Bud BEACH VOLLEYBALL movie, but no hockey. How is that even legal? Does any cblogger have a golden retriever that we could teach to play hockey? We can make our own.
endicott!! haha
according to wiki, endicott now plays on the Oji Ice Hockey Team of the Asia League.
nice.
due to trips and cblog my sales numbers this month are a bigger joke than shane endicott and rico fata combined
@ maria
No dog but if I can score a pet monkey you can bet his ass will be one hell of a stick handling primate!
fatacott p.o.?
